By Rick Del Bosque
Drs. Vandana and Suraj Kamat opened their home to the Boys & Girls Club to kick off the start of fundraising for the new Findley Family Gym with an art show and silent auction sale of works donated by 20+ local artists.
This is the first of a series of parties to raise money for the new gym. The results of the Kamat party were impressive with the total commitments in the $300,000 range; a great start for a facility that will cost $1,000,000+.
The art auction included about 50 pieces: watercolors, acrylics, stone carved and wooden crosses, handmade wooden pen and pencils, beautiful photography, carved Mexican style Santa Claus as well as Dr. Kamat's exquisite photos on metal. A number of our faithful supporters could not attend: Kevin Downes was in Colombia on business, Mark Little had a long planned prior engagement, Pam and Victor Perez sent a congratulatory note, Joe and Carolyn Merritt were chillin' in Colorado, and Roddy, Romy and Idy Gonzalez were attending graduation parties but their collective presence was significant to the amount raised. We had contributions from $50 to $50,000 and each and every one is significant to helping the thousands of kids we serve during the year.
Everyone's support is significant because the kids' programs and progress are validated by the support of the community involvement. The broader the support, the more likely that grant applications will be successful.
Catering was provided by Melissa Ortiz from Premont and was fantastic, and live music by Michael Rivera was very well received and added to the fun of the evening.
Thanks again to the Kamats, all of the artists, and those who joined in the fun and those who sent their regards.
