BISHOP - The Alice Lady Coyotes 12u team could not begin the postseason any better than they did Friday afternoon, as they took care of business with a remarkable 27-2 win over Benavides in the first round of the 12u playoffs in Bishop.
The offense was on the move all evening long, as Jacqueline Barrera got things going in the first inning with a single and was later brought home by Megan Calvez, who finished the evening with four hits.
On the mound for the Lady Coyotes was pitcher Layla Rodriguez who collected three hits of her own and struck out four batters as well. The offense was clicking on all cylinders for Alice, as they scored at least four runs in each inning and batting around the lineup in both the second and the fourth innings.
Even though her team gave her a pitcher's dream of run support, Rodriguez remained poised and continued to shut down Benavides batters one after the other. Benavides only managed a combined 6 hits and two runs off Alice pitching.
"We have been playing together for a long time and that helps. We work hard on our pitching and our batting and these girls know how to adjust quickly," said Head Coach Artemio Villarreal. Each batter for Alice collected at least three hits and all scored at least one run in their route over Benavides.
With the Lady Coyotes scoring an impressive 27 runs, Villarreal knows the competition ahead will be a challenge, but also knows that his team will be ready.
"Hopefully by tomorrow I will begin to start scouting the other team and see what we need to do to go for another W," Villarreal said.
