Late game woes
Alice gets swept Moody in three games, drops to 2-2 in district

There is only so much clawing and scratching you can do to stay afloat, but Alice would eventually sink in their fourth district match.

Now, they are .500 in district play.

The Lady Coyotes were swept for the second time in district play after falling 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 12-25) to the visiting Moody Lady Trojans Tuesday night at Alice High School.

Both squads were on pace with one another, but it was the Lady Trojans who finished off the early games, giving them momentum in the final stanza.
In the end, Missy Gonzalez's Lady Coyotes ran out of gas.

"The wind just fell out of our sail. It's hard when you play two competitive games and you don't finish," Gonzalez said. "It's hard to keep pushing when you know that there is three more games to keep playing. It's the little mistakes that you can't shake off and the score reflected that in that last game."

With the loss, Alice falls to 2-2 in district play this season and has not been able to put together back-to-back games.

Each win by a sweep for the Lady Coyotes has been followed with a losing sweep, but the road gets tougher with two of the next three games on the road and a tough Flour Bluff team coming this Friday night.

"Flour Bluff is going to pound the ball, so our defense is going to change," Gonzalez said. We have to make sure we are in position to slow the ball down on defense."

Tuesday night Alice was plagued by errors as the tip-filled attack by Moody and a communication breakdown cost the Lady Coyotes.

Alice's inability to put the Lady Trojans away showed heavily in the first set as Alice squandered a 23-21 lead late in the first game, and again when Moody pulled away late in the second.

"The lack of communication in our defense, of knowing who was responsible for what, and them playing a little smarter was the difference between us winning and not winning those games," Gonzalez said.

Alice's Lauren Barrios had a solid night with seven kills and 13 digs, while Erika Rodriguez and Bianca Alvarez combined for 22 digs.

Kailey Carter finished the night with five kills and five blocks.

Molly Barrera posted nine assists and Sabrina Ozuna followed with seven.

Alice is in action at 5 p.m. on Friday night at the Alice High School gym.
