Gurule arrested for DWI
A man was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated by an Alice officer at about 2 a.m. Friday morning, according to a report.
Officer Juan Martinez was stationary in the 1900 block of E. Main Street when he heard the loud exhaust from a Pontiac Trans Am turning south on Flournoy Road. The noise from the exhaust was loud enough to be in violation of the city's new noise ordinance.
Martinez noted as he turned onto Flournoy Road the Trans Am was traveling at a high rate of speed and passed a vehicle that was initially in front of it.
After stopping the vehicle, the driver - Christopher Paul Gurule - told Officer Martinez he was coming from Walmart. Officer Martinez informed him that Walmart was no longer open 24 hours a day. Gurule then said he had just left a sports bar at which he drank six beers. He said this after the officer noted he smelled of alcohol. According to the report, Gurule fumbled with his identification and had initially presented Officer Martinez with a credit card as a form of identification.
Gurule was asked to step out of the vehicle and perform a field sobriety test, which he failed. According to the report, Gurule could not follow instructions by missing his heal-toe steps, using his arms to balance, turning improperly and was hopping during the one-leg stand task.
Dispatch informed Officer Martinez Gurule had two prior DWI convictions. Gurule was transported to the local hospital for a blood specimen. The car was towed and Gurule was taken to the county jail. A passenger in the car with Gurule was picked up at the scene by a family member.
